This means that machines, processes and staff must be managed day and night. This is often achieved by using shift schedules based on a shift system. In this blog, we explain the different types of shift patterns and their impact on both employees and the factory.

What is a shift schedule in a factory?

A shift schedule is a timetable that defines when employees work and when they have time off, divided into specific time blocks. The purpose of such a schedule is to distribute production capacity efficiently across these time blocks, also known as shifts. Instead of having all employees working at the same time, different teams rotate in successive shifts. This allows machines to run for longer periods, up to 24 hours a day. By organising shift schedules effectively, downtime can be minimised and both staff and equipment can be used to their full potential. At the same time, a shift schedule must take into account rest periods, labour laws and the physical demands placed on employees.

Which types of shift patterns are most common?

Factories can use various shift systems. The choice depends on production requirements and workforce capacity. The most common shift patterns are the two-shift system, the three-shift system and the five-shift system. Below, we outline the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Two-shift system: a simple production schedule

The two-shift system is one of the simplest and most widely used shift patterns. It involves two teams alternating shifts, usually a morning shift and an afternoon/evening shift. A typical schedule might be 06:00–14:00 and 14:00–22:00. This system is suitable for factories that want to extend production beyond standard working hours without operating 24/7. It is often used in businesses with high but not continuous demand. Advantages include relatively simple planning and a lower burden on employees, as there are no night shifts. The downside is that machines are idle at night and maximum production capacity is limited.

Three-shift system: continuity with night shifts

The three-shift system is often used by companies aiming to move closer to continuous 24/7 production. In this system, three teams rotate through morning, afternoon and night shifts. For example:

Morning: 06:00 – 14:00

Afternoon: 14:00 – 22:00

Night: 22:00 – 06:00

Although this system includes night shifts, it is sometimes seen as a step towards full continuous operation. Production runs day and night, but often only on weekdays. The main advantage is optimal use of machinery and significantly increased output. However, it also introduces greater challenges in terms of workforce planning and employee workload.

Five-shift system explained

The five-shift system is designed for factories that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In this system, five separate teams rotate continuously, ensuring that each team gets sufficient rest without interrupting production. A key feature is that employees not only work but also have regular blocks of consecutive days off. This is possible because there are more teams than strictly required for continuous coverage. The advantages are clear: maximum production capacity, no machine downtime and a better distribution of workload. On the other hand, scheduling becomes more complex, and employees must adapt to varying working hours, including nights and weekends.

Which shift system suits your factory?

Choosing the right shift pattern requires careful consideration of several factors. One key factor is production volume. If demand is consistently high and machines must run continuously, a five-shift system is often the best option. If demand is less intense, a two- or three-shift system may be sufficient. It is also important to consider the impact on employees. The more complex the shift system, the greater the strain on staff, who may have to deal with night shifts, irregular hours and a more challenging work–life balance. Finally, the continuity of production processes must be taken into account. Some processes cannot simply be stopped, such as in the chemical or food industries. In such cases, a five-shift system is essential to maintain continuous operations.

What is the 4-5-5-4-5-5 shift schedule?

The 4-5-5-4-5-5 shift schedule is a specific pattern within the five-shift system. The name refers to the number of working days and rest days in a cycle. In practice, this means an employee might work 4 days, followed by several days off. This is then followed by 5 working days before the next rest period begins. The cycle repeats continuously, ensuring all teams rotate evenly across morning, afternoon and night shifts. This system helps maintain a good balance between work and recovery. An example of such a schedule could look like this:

4 working days (e.g. morning shifts)

2–3 days off

5 working days (e.g. afternoon shifts)

2–3 days off

5 working days (e.g. night shifts)

3–4 days off

Questions about shift work in factories?

Setting up or optimising a shift schedule can be complex.
